Every Child Matters

Students and staff wore orange shirts last Friday, September 29, to support and gain awareness of
Jace Jardine
residential school survivors.

The reason the colour orange is significant to residential school survivors is because of a young girl named Phyllis Webstad.  In 1973, Phyllis Webstad was just a six year old girl who wanted to wear her new shiny orange shirt to Mission School, where she attended for just one year.

When Phyllis entered the Mission she was stripped of her new orange shirt, and she never saw it again.

According to orangeshirtday.org, Phyllis said, "Since then the colour orange has always reminded me of that and how my feelings didn't matter, how no one cared and how I felt like I was worth nothing."
