Eagle to Tommie: Jordan Underhill

Jordan Underhill via STU
Jordan Underhill is another prime example of a student who came from our small community and has sealed a spot on a university roster.

Jordan spent most of his childhood in Ontario, until he and his family moved to Fredericton when he was in grade 8.

He always had an overwhelming love for the game of basketball, but did not try out for very many teams during his school years. His first year of Varsity Basketball in high school was during his senior year when he played for our Eagles.

After graduating Jordan still wanted to be part of his former team and transfer his love of the game to his former teammates. Underhill decided to join the team as the assistant coach along with Loretta Gorbett who had coached him. Jordan became a big part of the team and its coaching staff as he coached the boys alongside Loretta for the next four years. He also coached elementary basketball when he was in grade 12 and middle school basketball for one season.
Jordan Underhill with Blackville High School Team

The high school team had some great success during these four seasons, and they have continued this success into their current season.

Last year the boys had one of their best seasons in years, and they're hoping to continue to build on that. Underhill left the coaching staff to pursue his own basketball dreams.

Underhill is now a member of the St. Thomas University Tommies Basketball team. He worked hard over the past few years to develop his skills enough so that he could compete at the university level. Underhill's hard work has been paying off as he made the team in his rookie season.

We caught up with Underhill to ask him a couple of questions about the team and university life, as well as his thoughts on the current Eagles season so far.

"When did you first start playing basketball?"

" I got my first basketball net when I was 7, but I didn't join a team until grade 8."

"What other sports were you interested in during high school?"

" I liked golf, hockey, softball, soccer, and volleyball."

"What are your hopes for the team moving forward?"

"I hope we are able to make the playoffs and finish the season above .500."

"What motivated you to work towards the goal of making the team?"

"I wanted to be a role model to other kids in the community, and to show that people from our area can play at the university level."

"Do you have any comments about the Eagles team that you helped coach last year?"

" I think that they are still taking steps in the right direction. I think that the boys should be able to win the North-Eastern conference. Jesse Frenette and I worked together all summer on our basketball skills and it is showing on the court. Dan Richard has continued to play at an All-star level. With the addition of Devon Edwards it gives the boys another threat from three. Other players like Macaully Gillespie, Calvin Keenan, and Jacob Mercer have really stepped up defensively. All and all I think they are in a good spot with a great coaching staff."

"What are you taking in University?"

"I am currently working towards becoming a teacher."

"Do you find it hard getting your work done along with playing basketball?"

"Time management is the most difficult part of university, with practice, homework, and individual workouts it can be hard to find free time."

"Do you plan on returning to coaching with the Blackville program if you get the chance in the future?"

"I'd love to come back and continue to grow this program to be Provincial contenders every season."

"What goals do you have set for yourself moving forward with this season?"

"In Basketball I would like to become more athletic and a better defender. In education I would like to develop better study habits. Also, I would like to be an Academic All Canadian (CCAA), which is an award given to athletes who can maintain an average of 80% or higher."

Jordan Underhill (first one on the right from centre-back) with the Saint Thomas Basketball Team
Jordan is a fantastic example of never giving up on your goals and how hard work can pay off. Underhill is continuing to practice hard and improve his skills every single time he steps on the court. He makes Blackville proud.

The entire Eagles team would like to wish him the best of luck in the remainder of his season.

Anyone who wants to have a chance to see Jordan play can catch a glimpse of him at the Alumni game in the Blackville gym Saturday night (December 23, 2017).

Elf On The Shelf - Viewpoint

The elf at Blackville School has been getting into lots of trouble the past couple weeks, so we asked some of the students what they thought of Oodles Sugarkins!

Erin Hallihan:

Erin's favourite thing that Oodles has done so far is hang off of the Christmas count down over the elementary stairs on the first day. Erin has two of her own elves, Rosie and Ollie! Her prediction on what Oodles is going to do next is make a mess in all the classrooms!

Danica Mullin:

We asked Danica what her favourite thing was that Oodles has done so far and she said that her favourite was when Oodles hung from the Christmas count down calendar on the first day! She also has two of her own elves, Charlie and Rose! We asked her what she thinks the elf will do next, and she thinks that Oodles will hang on a teacher's light in one of the classrooms.

Hannah Hallihan and Brooke Newman:

Hannah's favourite thing the elf has done is when he was hiding in Mrs. Sturgeon's classroom window, and Brooke said that her favourite thing is when he was hanging off the ceiling! They each have elves of their own; Hannah's elves are named Sarah and Randle, but Brooke only has one elf and her name is Elsa! We asked Brooke and Hannah what they thought Oodles was going to do next and Brooke said that she thinks he will hang off a clock in the hallway, and Hannah thinks that he will make a huge mess somewhere!

His dedication to the sport helps him shine on the court. Richard is an extremely hard worker and never gives up on a play. He goes hard until the final whistle has blown. Richard also is a great aspect to keeping the team going. He has team building skills and always rallies our boys before and after the games; no matter the outcome. Daniel Richards fantastic energy transfer onto the court and into his game. Richard is most definitely the most pumped to get on the court each and every single day.

The team shows a lot of hustle and effort every game, and that is the first step to being a very good team. Our team is a defensive minded squad and the key to winning Basketball games is always defence. I believe we have a chance to repeat our success from last year and possibly even improve on it. Last season we hosted regionals and then went to sectionals where we lost to Harvey, the three time defending champs. Last season proved that our teams hard work has been paying off and that we can compete with the South side of the province which has always been considered the much stronger side in Basketball. I am excited to see what the remainder of this season has in store for us." said Daniel Richard.

He is a committed player and never misses a chance to get out on the ice. Gillespie's attitude is a key factor in his play, his positivity translates onto the ice and helps keep the boys rolling. He's a hard working player and shows a true love for the game. Gillespie is a skilled player and has a great knowledge of the game. So far, the coaching staff has been extremely pleased with Gillespie's play and his ability to give great efforts everyday. "Play to win; Expect to win." Elf on The Shelf - Kids Korner

Oodles Sugarkins was found in Mlle. Mindi's grade one class on Monday, December 4. He was just lounging around after hanging around all weekend. We know that this little guy is up to no good and is definitely planning something big.

Oodles also moved his Christmas Break Countdown; he thought it was a better idea to move it, because now everyone can see it! This little elf is ever so active and we are so surprised that he hasn't gotten into a lot of trouble yet! Stay tuned to see what Oodles does next!

The Return of the Elf on the Shelf

December 1 marks the day that the elf on shelf is officially back at Blackville School. It's been a long wait, but he has arrived.

This year the elf is Oodles Sugarkins. He loves getting into trouble, making crafts and playing in the snow.

Today he left notes in all the classrooms for all the children to know he was here, and to come and find him.

It was a huge hit with the elementary classes; all the kids were ecstatic at the fact that the elf was finally here. He was "hanging" around the school today, with a count down until Christmas break.

Mrs. Turner's class wanted to see if he was real, so they left him notes, along with a chocolate bar (his favourite).

When they went back to see if it was there, the chocolate bar was gone. Something even more exciting was that he was holding the wrapper. Proving he really ate it! We can't wait to see what he has in store for Monday.

Sports Update: November 24-31

Maguire Gillespie
In Senior Boys Hockey action, our boys headed to Tobique Valley for a tournament last weekend.

In the boys next game they had a tough match, falling behind to Hartland. The boys fought hard all game trying to come back but just came up short in this one losing to the Huskies 6-2. Peyton Gillespie had the 2 goals for Blue and Gold. Aaron Walls had 2 primary assists while Denver Donovan had the secondary assist.

The boys followed up their loss by picking up a big win in their game against Sir James Dunn Academy (SJDA). The boys had a powerhouse game, controlling most of the play and coming out with a 8-2 win. Aaron Walls recorded another hat trick on the season, having 3 goals and 2 assists on the night.
