A Festive Experience at Blackville School

Students were busy not only with their studies during the week leading up to Christmas at Blackville school.

The students participated in dress up days during the week. Monday was Red and Green Day and Wednesday was Character Day, but with the celebrations being interrupted by the snowstorm on Tuesday, Thursday was both Switch Day and Ugly Christmas Sweater Day to make up for lost time. Elementary students had an opportunity to purchase affordable gifts for family members on Wednesday when the High School Student Council sponsored Santa's Workshop on Wednesday. The Student Council members also offered free gift wrapping. Click here for photos. 

The High School Drama club performed their Christmas, A Very Stagehand Christmas: Reindeer Apocalypse Storm on Wednesday night. Click here to view the photos. 

The Blackville School 2018 Elementary Christmas Concert was held on Thursday morning in the gym. Classes from Kindergarten through Grade 5 participated in the festive show. Click here for pictures from the concert. 

Finally, Santa paid a visit on Friday morning to visit with the students and made sure they each went home with a treat for the holidays. Click here to see photos.

High School Basketball Tournament this Weekend

The high school basketball team is hosting a home tournament this weekend at Blackville School.

The senior girls and boys basketball teams will need the support and encouragement of local fans as they battle some of the most challenging teams in the league.

The tournament started this afternoon and will continue on Saturday.

The girls took on the challenge of playing the MVHS AAA girls over the weekend. Sadly, they were shutout by the rival team.

They put their best effort forward as they played a team that was much more high caliber than them.

It was, however, a great effort and the fans gave them a huge round of applause as the Golden Eagles skated off the ice.

Senior Boys Amazing Comeback Win

The past week has been a busy one for sports, including Senior Boys hockey action.

On Saturday, the high school boys hockey team defeated SJD 8-6. The boys played one of their best games ever as they were down 5-3 going into the third and came back hungry for the win.
                 
Scoring for the boys were: Peyton Gillespie with 2, Preston Gillespie with 2, Garett Donohue with 1, Ty Croft with 1, Landon Coughland  with 1, and Caleb Gillespie with 1.

Elementary Kids Christmas Fun Night this Wednesday

The Elementary Kids Christmas Fun Night will take place on Wednesday, December 12.

Grades K-2 will be from 6-7 pm, and grades 3-5 from 7:15- 8:15 pm.

Entry to the event is free and is sponsored by the Blackville Home and School.

Games, prizes and treats will be handed out.

Grade 9 Music Class Participates in CBC's National Music Challenge

The grade 9 music class at Blackville School participated in CBC's Canadian Music Class Challenge, performing their version of "Stay," a pop song by Alessia Cara.

"We think it went pretty good," said grade 9 student Emma Hallihan "It took up about three months all together and we believe we did a decent job."

"It went pretty good," agreed Camden Curtis.

Their performance is featured on the CBC Music Class YouTube channel and website. The contest ran from August 28 and ended November 27. The Top Tens in each of the seven categories will be announced this Tuesday and the winners will be announced on December 18.

According to the CBC Music website, the three goals of the contest are for kids to learn Canadian music in the classroom; draw attention to the exceptional work music teachers are doing with children across the country; and reinforce the importance of music in a well-rounded education.

Students Participate in Hour of Code

Over 30% of students at all the grade levels participated in the Hour of Code this week.

The Hour of Code is a global movement, reaching 180+ countries, and has been held annually the last few years.

The movement is designed to promote coding and programming during computer science week.

Students are introduced to the basics through online tutorials.

Cobras Vs. Eagles: The Beginning of a Rivalry

Both the high school girls and boys played NSER on December 3. Even though both games were close, they are now ready to make a come back at the annual Cobras VS Eagles coming up soon.

The girls lost with a score of 45 to 41, and the boys lost with a score of 71 to 56, both games were close and there is lots of room for improvement for the next big match.

The high school boys hockey team played last weekend against Saint Quentin. The boys won with a score of 7-3.

Scoring for the Eagles were Garett Donohue, Peyton Gillespie and Devon Underhill with two goals each, and Macaully Gillespie with one.

Students in kindergarten to grade eight across the province will be learning about mental health in school through December 3-7 to inspire youth and their families to raise awareness and support for youth mental health.

At Blackville School, the grade 7 health class will be colouring strips themed to inform them of the five aspects of mental health and will spend a class discussing their questions.  Also, individual participating classes will be given the chance to ring a bell during class time in support of the event.

Blackville Young Entrepreneurs Fair December 12 and 13

Young entrepreneurs at Blackville School are learning about business, creating their own products, and putting their imagination to work.

As part of their learning, they will be holding The Blackville Young Entrepreneurs Fair at Blackville School on December 12 from 9am-11am and December 13 from 8:30am-11am and 1pm-3pm.

The students will be offering 35 unique products to choose from and prices vary from $0.50 to $5.00.

This event is an excellent chance to support young entrepreneurs and also find some different Christmas gifts for the holiday season.

Blackville's Seasonal Duos: Slight Rise to Victory

Over the weekend the boys hockey team traveled across New Brunswick to participate in an extensive tournament in Hartland.

The boys started out strong, winning against Saint Quentin, 7-2. Scoring for the Eagles were Peyton and Preston with three goals each, and Landon Coughlan with one.

They became victorious again with the second game they played, the score was 4-3. Scoring for the Eagles were Peyton with two, Preston got one and Denver scoring on a power play.

While the odds were looking good for the boys, they stepped off the ice sadly losing to Hartland, 7-3. Ty Croft, Macaully Gillespie and Denver Donovan scoring the three standing goals.

The boys were upset to lose their last game in the tournament, but they could hold their heads up after hearing the news that Hartland won the whole tournament, so they were beat out by the best team present.

Monday night the boys basketball team played Sunny Corner and played hard, but still walked out with their heads hanging, the score was 89 to 61. This just shows our boys that victory is not easy and you need to work for it!

Grade 11 and 12 Students Attend Career Day Tour

Grade eleven and twelve students from Blackville High and Central New Brunswick Academy (CNBA) participated in a Career Day Tour sponsored by J.D. Irving (JDI) last Thursday, November 15. The tour informed students of jobs that will soon become available to them.

The tour began with a safety lesson, as students had to acquire safety gear in preparation of the tour that began at the sawmill located in Doaktown.

Students were given a hard hat, gloves, a reflector vest, safety glasses and a healthy snack to get ready for the day.

Students learned that the sawmill deals with multiple species of wood that are sorted, cut and packaged so they are ready for shipment to consumers around the world.

High School Hockey Showdown

Over the weekend the Blackville High Boys hockey team played an amazing game against the St. Leonard boys team.

The boys gave their best effort as they were going into the third period down 6-2. The boys clawed their way back as they came to a 7-6 loss.

Scoring for the boys were Peyton Gillespie with 2, Preston Gillespie with 2, Garett Donohue with 1, Caleb Gillespie with 1.

The High School Girls played an incredible game against JMH winning 6-2. It was their first game of the year.  Scoring for the girls were Drea Hallihan with 2, Layla Hallihan with 1, Amber walls with 1, Laura Colford with 1, and Jayna Brennan with 1.

Set Aside Technology and Make Time for Reading

It is no secret that most kids hate reading as it is often associated with school. Many kids don’t like school and therefore dislike everything to do with it, and when they walk out that front door and throw their book bags onto the floor, books are out-of-sight, out-of-mind. Does this affect them negatively?

It is no secret that for as long as words were written, and possibly even before then, knowledge was shared through text. The most text that some of today’s youth see is an instant message. It is my personal opinion, along with many others, that social media lowers intelligence, and this is where most spend their time in recent years. Society has abandoned books and knowledge for on screen opinions. What does that mean for the direction in which society is heading?

Africa 2020: 30 Students from Blackville School Attending Dallaire Presentation

Roméo Dallaire

Blackville School is taking part in an Anglophone School District initiative called Africa 2020.

Fifty students will be able to visit Rwanda during the first or second week of March 2020, for a cross culture learning experience inspired by Romeo Dallaire.

Lieutenant-General Roméo Antonius Dallaire, is a Canadian humanitarian, author and retired senator and general. Dallaire founded The Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative, and has written novels concerning these types of issues.

Dallaire will be speaking in Miramichi to help launch this Africa 2020 initiative on Thursday, November 1. About thirty Blackville high school students will be attending the afternoon presentation at James M. Hill.

Thursday evening he will be an honoured guest at a dinner and silent auction fundraiser at the Rodd Miramichi. Dallaire will be the keynote speaker at the dinner and will be introduced by Senator David Adams Richards.

Regionals Loss

The senior boys soccer team had a heartbreaking loss this Saturday against MF Richard, losing 3-1. The boys fought a hard battle but ended up falling short.

Players who will be graduating this year are: Peyton Gillespie, Devon Underhill, Garett Donohue, Denver Donovan and Ethan Whalen.
The only goal for the boys was from Denver Donovan on a plenty kick.

Middle School Girls

For the month of October, Abigail McEvoy is our middle school girls athlete of the month. She always runs super hard, even though they do not have barely any substitutes, and no matter how tired she is, you can tell she's giving 100 percent!

River Stewart was chosen as the middle school boys athlete of the month. Dedication is his name; he always comes to the field to play. He plays his hardest every game and makes every shot worth it!

Zone Winners! Senior Boys Soccer

This past weekend was a roller coaster of events for both senior boys and girls soccer! The girls in a must win game put an amazing effort forward trying to advance to regionals.

Sadly, they fell short losing in a shoot out after a double overtime! They really gave it their all. The final score was 1-0 for Stanley.

The senior boys also had a must win game on Saturday against Dalhousie. The boys secured their spot in regionals winning 2-1.

Scoring for the boys was Ethan Whalen with both goals. The boys will play again Saturday to see if they move onto Provincials. Good luck, boys.

Reflection on Student Leadership Conference

The three students attended the Canadian Leadership Conference
in Edmonton, Alberta in September. 

I've had the fortunate honour of getting the chance to attend the Canadian Student Leadership Conference in Edmonton, Alberta this September, and let me tell you it was truly an eye opening and life changing experience.

I met so many new people and I saw some of the most miraculous sights I have ever seen, such as the rocky mountains 2270 meters in the air and also the township of Jasper, one of the most comforting and welcoming places I have been. 

These are only two of the amazing things I got the chance to see in Alberta, but there were so many more that I hope you get to see yourself because only seeing the sight for yourself would do the justice.

Senior Boys Soccer Action

Yesterday sports action saw the senior boys soccer team destroy CNBA 6-0. The boys came out to play in their last regular season home game. 

Scoring for the boys were, Garett Donohue with 3, Peyton Gillespie with 2, and Devon Underhill with 1. Way to go, boys!

Last night saw the girls fought a hard 90 minutes but sadly fell to NSER losing 2-1. Scoring for the girls was Laura Colford on an amazing penalty kick!

Also in the news last night the middle school boys beat Dr. Losier 5-0. Scoring for the boys were, Austin McCormack with 2, Roman Stewart, Jackson Jardine, and Brayden Duffy all with 1 each.

Creating Ripple Effects at Blackville School

Many students are likely familiar with the excessively large water bottles that used to stand in our hallways. These were used to collect bottles and other recyclable deposits. This is similar to the project the students in Mr. Hallihan’s Environmental Science class is undertaking.

Students must collect a certain sum of "eco-points" in the class. These are awarded for contributing something meaningful to the environment. To collect their class points, some students have decided to help clean up the community of Blackville.

This is meaningful for many reasons, as it is not only a way to ensure lots of "eco-points," but also improve the appearance of our community and clean up the environment. The money earned from the bottles and cans found in the ditches will also contribute to other Environmental Science class projects.

Elementary Soccer Teams Share Victories

Both elementary soccer teams emerged victorious from the District Jamboree.

The gold team first suffered a loss to Miramichi Rural, with a score of 4-0. They defeated Nelson 6-1 with J.P. McCormack scored 3 goals, and Dalas Curtis, Kolton Collins and Thomas Hallihan had 1 each. Finally they defeated Millerton 2-1 with J.P. McCormack and Milia Hallihan scoring the 2 goals.

The blue team first played Nelson, tied them 4-4. Jace Jardine scored 3 goals, and Garland Manderville scored 1. They then went on to defeat Eel Ground 8-0. Shamus Gunter scored 3 goals, Jace Jardine scored 2, Samuel Brennan and Nate Hallihan had 1 each. Lastly, they played the other Nelson team, succeeding with a score of 7-0. Shamus Gunter and Garland Manderville with 2 each, Allison Manderville, Nick and Nate Hallihan had 1 each.

Walkathon Efforts Celebrated with Prizes and Pies

Last Friday, two lucky students were given the rare chance to sweeten the appearance of Blackville School's Principal and Vice Principal.

Grade 7 student Stephen Brophy and Grade 3 Ellie Jardine were drawn to be the fortuitous holders of a pan filled with whipped cream. This fluffy weapon was launched into the awaiting faces of Mrs. Moody and Mr. Buggie. 

The humorous event was held in celebration of the efforts of those who raised money for a recent fundraising Walkathon.

Grade 2 student Hannah Hallihan raised the most money, and second place was a tie between kindergarten student Cameron Innes and grade 4 student Keenan Underhill.

Senior Girls Game

Last night we saw the girls in a must win game dominate the field and pull a fantastic win over NSER.

 They needed a win to secure their spot in regionals, and they sure came out to play last night, beating the girls 4-0. Scoring for the girls were, Tori-Sullivan with 3 goals, and Reese Urquhart with 1.

The girls were so pumped with their win last night that they celebrated after the game by going out for supper with some of the players.

The senior girls won one of their two games on Saturday. On the first encounter, the girls suffered a tough loss to Dalhousie. On the second, gave their all, resulting in a tie to Sugarloaf. Scoring for the girls were Piper Duffy and Courtney Donahue.

The Senior boys soccer game against NSER ended in victory, winning 7-2. Scoring for the boys were, Preston Gillespie with three, Drake Donovan, Garett Donohue and Macaully Gillespie with 1 each.

Sports Update

Senior boys soccer fell to MVHS on Wednesday with a score of 3-2, the boys put their best effort forward! The boys defeated Stanley by a score of 2-1, scoring for the boys were Peyton Gillespie, and his brother Preston Gillespie.

Senior girls had a sweet victory over Baie-Sainte-Anne 3-0, scoring for the girls were, Tori Lee Sullivan, Laura Colford, and Reese Urquhart. Way to go girls! The girls face off against Dalhousie Saturday at 11:00 am and will be going with a double header against Sugarloaf at 2:00 pm.

Elementary Rival Soccer Game this Thursday

Blackville Gold vs Blackville Blue is all the talk this week at Blackville school, the biggest game of their elementary careers! 

They will be friends before the game and friends after the game but during the game they will be, ruthless rivals doing anything to win. 

Everyone come out and support your Eagles in this riveting match. This will take place Thursday at 3:30 pm.   

Viewpoint: Nutrition Policy

Students share their thoughts on changes to the nutrition policy (Healthier School Food Environment) which applies stronger guidelines on what foods are permitted for breakfast programs, special school events and fundraisers. 

Please Note: Since the policy went into effect, the government has indicated there will be a transition period, and the policy will not affect fundraisers and special school events.

Middle School Girls 

Raelyn Sherrad is our Middle School Girls Athlete of the Month. She stepped up to the plate to try out for the position of goal tender for our first game.  She is rocking it, and without any prior experience!

Middle School Boys 

Austin McCormack is our Middle School Boys Athlete of the Month. Austin only started playing soccer this year and already is dominating in mid-field.

High School Girls

           Laura Colford is our High School Girls Athlete of the Month. Laura has overcome her injury last season and now she is back playing and scored in her first two games!

          Garett Donohue is our High School Boys Athlete of the Month. He is dedicated and always puts forth his best effort.

Students Test Catapult Prototypes

Tests can be a common activity in school. But a group of students at Blackville School were involved in a very different test this week: catapult testing.

Students who built catapults for the Catapult Challenge for the The Pumpkin Fling this Saturday at Waterford Green in Chatham did a test run at Blackville School on Thursday and Friday.

Students from participating schools will be launching pumpkins to see which goes the farthest on Saturday. The creator of the winning catapult will be awarded $750.00. There is also a chance to win the School Spirit Award, valued at $250.00.

Mr. Ashley Hallihan has organized a team with his Environmental Science class. “The students use science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to build their own creation with lots of school spirit,” explained Hallihan.

Tackling Childhood Obesity Requires a Comprehensive Approach

Returning from summer break always requires adjustments being made. Waking up earlier in the mornings, having to think about complex word problems rather than basking in the sun, these are changes associated with the first week of school. What is not expected is major dietary changes.

A new policy was developed over the summer that deals with the types of foods schools are allowed to serve. This ranges from cafeteria lunch lines, all the way to school-based fundraisers.

This policy states that all foods must have nutritional value, banning all unhealthy snacks and beverages. Along with this, foods like breaded chicken burgers and fries will also be removed from the menu. What has students most upset, however, is the outlaw of chocolate milk.
