People's Picks - December 18

For this week's edition of People's Picks, we asked Grade 12 student Abby Keenan who her favourite Blackville High School staff member was.

Abby enthusiastically chose Brent Wilson, a janitor here at BHS. Brent has been employed at Blackville School for the past 18 years, first as a bus driver and then as part of the janitorial staff.

Abby chose Brent because of his wonderful attitude and because he always goes out of his way to talk to students in the halls and make them feel welcome.

Brent was very shocked but also very happy with his win. "Wow! I feel pretty good right now." Brent also said that the best advice he could give the rest of the students and staff is to stay happy. "I always try to be happy, and it's gotten me pretty far."

Just yesterday, Brent witnessed four high school students participating in a recent dance trend born on the social media platform, TikTok. Instead of ignoring them, like most people probably would, Brent hopped in the video and showed off his amazing dance skills. Talk about a boomer with rhythm. This is just one example of Brent's ability to make students happy, no matter the circumstances.

Congratulations, Brent! Keep up the good work! Click here for a link to Brent's TikTok or see the video posted below.

Grade 9 students Amber Hambrook, Tara Martin, Chloe Hambrook, Tyra Martin, Emily Stewart, and Lydia Sullivan donated $300 to the Miramichi SPCA.

Originally, the six girls were fundraising for a rainbow crosswalk to be painted on the entrance stairs of the school for their group which they call the GSA (Genders and Sexualities Alliance).

Through their grade 7 and grade 8 years of school, the girls held numerous bake sales and made close to $1000.

Instead of painting the crosswalk, they decided to donate $300 of the $1000 to the SPCA and give the rest of their money to their 2023 graduation fund.

Emily Stewart explained, "...we wanted to donate to the SPCA because we all really care about animals and wanted it to go to something we care about."

The ELF Program at Blackville School

The ELF Program (Elementary Literacy Friends) is a charitable organization that manages a volunteer reading achievement program for struggling readers in grade two.

Students who are struggling to read at their grade level by the end of grade two can sometimes experience significant difficulty throughout the rest of their schooling years, falling further behind each year.

The ELF Program brings community volunteers, schools, and parents together to ensure children are reading at grade level by the end of the year. They currently have 580 ELF and CLEF volunteers helping students in 146 New Brunswick Schools.

Currently, Blackville School has one student from Ms. Sobey's Grade 2 class enrolled in the program and will have another individual joining the program after Christmas.

The program started at the first of November 2019 and will happen every Tuesday and Friday from 2 pm to 3 pm.

During this hour, the literacy volunteer and student will go over the material provided. They will participate in literacy games with rewards that are combined with reading interesting books and answering questions.

The students learn that developing important reading skills can be easy and fun. Volunteer Lana Cottow says she enjoys helping her student with his reading. She states that it is a wonderful program and it brings her so much joy to participate in it.

"We are so grateful to all of these volunteers who are giving their time to read with a child in their community. These children are receiving a boost in confidence and love of reading to help set them up for success throughout the rest of the school year. " The ELF Fall Newsletter.

Visual Arts Students Explore Surrealism

During their first semester, Mrs. Moody's Gr. 9 Visual Arts class showed off their artistic abilities with a project on surrealism focusing on subjects such as visual puns or collagraphs. In this project the students had to choose an artist to research that used certain techniques in their work, providing an artistic informational page along side their curated art piece(s).

"Mood Swings" by Tara Martin and Amber Hambrook
Taking approximately two weeks to complete, the goal was for the students to experience and appreciate artwork, to learn how artists unleash their subconscious through the art of realism, and of course to have fun.

Mrs. Moody was very pleased with the results. "The students did very well with this project. I love to be able to showcase our talent here at Blackville School and this project did just that. Some of our artist pages were of professional quality. It was neat to watch my students take risks with their work, fail along the way and be proud of their final products, " she said.
Grade 9 student Tara Martin worked with another student, Amber Hambrook, focusing on visual puns to create "Mood Swings," "French Fries," "Hot Dog," and "Cool as a Cucumber."

"We wanted to create pieces that were fun and that everyone could understand. We did a lot of researching online and got a lot of inspiration from the examples we found, then created our own," she explained.

"English Muffin" by Tyra Martin, Olivia Donahue, and Nathan Gillespie
Tyra Martin worked with classmates Olivia Donahue and Nathan Gillespie to create "English Muffin," "Hairspray," "Superbowl," and "Soap Opera."

These three students also focused on visual puns.

"While creating our pieces, I learned to slow down and take my time with everything. Our project took a little longer than expected, but we were all very happy with the result. Teamwork was a huge part of this project and that taught me a lot about how to work efficiently in a group and involve everyone's ideas in the pieces, " explained Tyra.

"I learned to just be myself and try new designs and to be creative," says Layne Jardine, another Visual Arts student.

Art can be a very connective learning experience from working together on creating an art piece, to sharing the outcome and feeling proud of your efforts. You can learn about more than just art from a Visual Arts class.
